Cleaning Humidifier Filters

Humidifiers are used to help relive chest and nasal congestion in adults and children. For some people it works so well that they do not have to use any type of medicines. It works by pulling out allergens and bacteria from the air and trapping all of it inside of the filter. It does not take long for this filter to become filthy.

Rather than changing it out every two or three weeks you could clean it once a week. This will help to extend the life of your humidifier and to save you money from having to buy a filter every few weeks.

Start off by unplugging the humidifier and removing the filter. There will most likely be standing water in the unit so unplugging it will help to reduce any problems that you might have of getting shocked or electrocuted.

In order to get to the filter you need to remove the cover or the tank. Make sure that you are careful to not move the humidifier or else extra water will leak out through the bottom and sides.

When you have found the filter you can remove it from the base. The filter will be wet so let it drip into the base till you transfer it into a sink. Try not to get this dirty water on the floor.

Place the filter into the sink and rinse it off with cool water. If you see any mold on it you need to rinse it off completely. You must not apply any chemical solutions to it or it will get damaged.

Fill the sink up with water and soak the filter for ten minutes. Drain the sink and rinse it off with cold water one last time. Set it on a towel to allow the excess water to fall out. Do not squeeze it or wring it out. Before you can put it back wipe off the inside of the humidifier.
